Hannah Barlow, Doutlon Lambeth Stoneware Vase, 1885

The lip of the vase was completely missing and there was a section of the base that too was missing. The client wanted all missing areas filled and remodelled. Research was undertaken to establish the form of the missing lip.

Treatment involved firstly cleaning the surface with a weak solution of a non-ionic detergent and water. This was followed by rinsing and further cleaning with the controlled use of a Derotor GV steam cleaner.

The missing area to the base and the missing rim were replicated using an epoxy putty that was refined and modelled with various sanding papers and hand tools. Finally, these areas were retouched with a clear acrylic glaze and artist’s dry powder pigments, which once dry were polished with a plastic polish.
